Ballycastle has the most northerly coastal marina in Ireland and was opened in 1999.The marina has 74 berths in the shelter of the inner harbour which comprises three pontoons. The harbour is accessible at all stages of the tide and the approach is past the ferry berth for Rathlin Island. Outside the harbour, the seas are liable to sudden swells and exposed to onshore winds
The first Earl of Antrim built a castle in 1565 (today there is no trace). This castle is where the town derives its name, 'baile' the Irish for town or village and 'caisleain' for castle, which stood alongside the church in the Diamond, close to where Castle Street joins Ann Road. The town had a busy industrial legacy during the 18th century. However like the castle, there remains very little today.
As a seaside town, Ballycastle is a popular resort famed for its historic and lively 'Lammas Fair' which is held in late August. Ballycastle's seafront along the Quay Road boasts a variety of restaurants, shops and bars and all within close walking distance of the marina. Also nearby are swimming pools, tennis courts and golf clubs for easy convenience.
