The marina is on the south shore of Belfast Lough and is easily accessible to the cruising routes of the Irish Sea. A major scheme to protect and revitalise Bangor culminated in the opening of the marina in 1989 which is right in the centre of the town. The marina is set back inside the inner harbour breakwaters and affords good shelter. Note: the wash from fast ferry services in the area can sometimes be noticed within the harbour during certain conditions.
The marina is also at the centre of sailing in Northern Ireland and holds the 5 Gold Anchor and 'Blue Flag' Awards.Within the local north Down area there are six yacht clubs offering an extensive sailing and race events programme
The town was formed by the creation of a single pier built in 1757 out of the rocky creek which was cleared. For over the next 100 years a steady trade in exports was conducted until a new pier was built and became the berth for the Belfast steamer. This led to the coming of the railway which in turn brought the age of tourism to seaside Bangor. During the 1920's, both coal boats and summer pleasure craft plied the waters whilst onshore the town received an expansion in well known public amenities.
However the harbour suffered exposure to the weather and the town to post-war decline over many decades and this led to a major seafront development plan. The plan saw radical changes and improvements that took place in the 1980's leading to the building of the marina. This scheme led to a regenerated town which offers a multi-million pound shopping centre and a new hotel.
Visitors today to the marina will find hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and many leisure attractions all within easy walking distance. International tourist attractions, such as the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and Heritage Centre, are just a few miles from Bangor as are many other historic local attractions
