A maritime heritage town, Brightlingsea is the only cinque port outside Kent and Sussex. Situated at the mouth of the River Colne, it is a major yachting centre with one of the best stretches of sailing on the East Coast. The town is also home to one of England´s oldest timber-framed buildings, the 13th C. Jacobes Hall.
Brightlingsea is a quiet place without the arcades and noisy distractions of the big resorts. There are two formal recreation grounds off regent road and Lower Park Road which are open all year round during daylight hours. There are many delightful walks along footpaths all round Brightlingsea and maps of these walks are available from shops in the town.
The paddling pool at the far end of the promenade is growing in popularity. Fed by tidal waters, it is an ideal spot for toddlers who love to play in the sand that surrounds the pool. There is a small pier jutting out a little further on and many enjoy catching the sun and sea breezes in the shadow of Bateman's Tower.
