The marina is situated on the north shore of Belfast Lough to the west of Carrickfergus Castle. There are two safe and secure harbours for craft.
In 1985 a purpose-built marina was constructed west of the existing harbour to accommodate 280 boats, berthed at pontoons behind rubble stone breakwaters. Both harbours have these rugged breakwaters, which are designed for wave calming measures during rough seas, absorbing energy from the heavy swells.
Visiting craft can avail of the quality services and facilities which exist entirely to meet boat owners' needs of safety, security and convenience.A separate marine service pontoon facility is located on the southern end of the west pier in addition an inner harbour area and a public slipway.
The entrance to the marina is situated at the eastern end of the basin and is open to the South West. The ends of the two breakwaters are marked with red and green beacons. Note presence of isolated tubular piles in central harbour area. Leave these piles to port on approach to harbour and inner harbour berths. As the facilities there are situated on the Carrickfergus Sandbank, depths may vary due to shifting sands
Set beside the magnificent 12th century castle that borders the harbour, Carrickfergus has a long and distinguished history. Ireland's oldest Norman castle was built by either John de Courcy or Hugh de Lacy. However the castle fell when captured by the forces of the Crown by King John in 1210. It remained a loyal stronghold and it was here that King William of Orange landed on the way to the Battle of the Boyne. The main street runs parallel to the town waterfront and is where shopping facilities and services can be found.Views spread out across Belfast Lough with the yellow gantry cranes of the famous H&W Shipyard standing in the distance. Carrickfergus has excellent road and rail connections to Belfast and Larne ferryports and the international airport at Aldergrove to the north-west.
