Embraced by the arms of Dun Laoghaire harbour situated on the south side of Dublin Bay is the largest marina in Ireland, accommodating 500 fully secure and serviced berths. The marina was completed in 2001 and is well sheltered by two internal breakwaters within the main harbour which is exposed during north-easterly winds. Visiting yachts are normally berthed at the end of the piers on the hammerhead pontoons and at berth Q. Berths are designed for easy manoeuvring with ample space and a full range of facilities are located nearby.
The marina is centrally positioned in the harbour and is surrounded by yacht clubs that make Dun Laoghaire a leading centre of sailing activity. The port is the terminal for the fast ferry from Holyhead. Note: Outside the protection of the marina, attention needs to be taken to the wash from the fast ferry, and keep clear of the fairway. The marina is within walking distance of the town's main shopping street.
The town's meaning in Irish is the 'fort of King Laoire', the king whose fort was built in the old town close to the present-day Coal harbour. The harbour was originally built as a refuge harbour in 1847 (then the largest artificially built harbour in the world) for vessels using the port of Dublin. In 1834 a railway to the capital was completed. This saw a dramatic development of the town, which has become a fashionable seaside resort and suburb south of the city.
The town has inherited a rich fabric of Georgian architecture and this is reflected in residential squares and civic buildings. The town has seen recent development in a new shopping centre, cinema and a combined theatre, shopping and leisure complex.Take a walk along either the West or East Pier (the shorter and more popular pier) where the harbour boasts panoramic views across Dublin Bay and mountains. There are good public transport links to Dublin city, outer suburbs and to the south the Wicklow Mountains can also be easily reached.
