Formerly a small Flemish village of fishermen, Dunkerque harbour was created circa 800 BC. Its strategic geographical location very quickly attracted the interest of the French, Spanish, English and Dutch. The town of Dunkerque became definitely French in 1662 and enjoyed great prosperity thanks to Vauban who transformed the port and the ramparts. It was the last French city to be liberated on 9 May 1945.
Dunkerque-Dunes de Flandre offers all the amenities of a town of 70,000 inhabitants in a metropolitan area of 210,000 inhabitants. This is combined with leisure facilities along 15 kilometres of coastline, including several marinas and the third largest commercial port in France.
Located only an hour and a half from Paris and Brussels by TGV, Dunkerque is easily accessible via the motorway network (E42) and via the waterways through an extensive network of canals.
