The marina at Glasson Dock lies on the River Lune, to the west of Sunderland Point and is accessed via the outer dock. The non-tidal marina is located within the inner dock basin and has very good shelter for the 240-berth facility with additional berths for 20 craft. To enter the dock, it is recommended that the Lune No. 1 buoy be left at least an hour before high water so to enter this outer dock. It should be noted that this outer dock is used for small sized commercial vessels.
Glasson Dock is a useful stoppingoff point for sailing to or from Scotland, within easy reach of the Isle of Man and Ireland and an excellent base for the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Glasson Dock is connected by a canal branch route linking the Lancaster Canal and is navigable for narrowboats/ small craft. However yachts can sail upriver to Lancaster City to berth at St. Georges Quay (Maritime Museum), although this option is highly dependent upon favourable tidal conditions.
The small village near Lancaster is located in a rural setting rich in wildlife along the Lune estuary, with views of Morecambe Bay and beyond. Glasson was developed originally by the Lancaster Port Commission so as to serve larger vessels that could no longer reach the city. The village is very easy to walk about and is serviced by local amenities including a café, restaurants, pubs and speciality food shop.
In Lancaster, there are spectacular views from the water bus on the famous Lancaster canal aqueduct. Designed by John Rennie, it is considered to be one of the 'wonders of the waterways' and a masterpiece of civil engineering. Alternatively there are great vantage points at Lancaster Castle and Priory on the hill that overlooks the city, to view St. Peter's Cathedral, the Ashton Memorial on the skyline and the Lake District Fells. In addition the city's great historical transport links of the past and present can be viewed with the River Lune below.
