On the River Rhyd-hir, where the river enters the estuary, is the marina at Pwllheli. Owned by Gwynedd Council and operated under contract by Yacht Haven Management Ltd, the marina is the only sheltered harbour in the north of Cardigan Bay and has a capacity for 400-berths on pontoon with piles.
The marina is set back from the open sea on the estuary and it has access at virtually all states of the tide. The marina was one of the first marinas in the U.K. to be awarded a Blue Flag. In recent years the marina hosted a number of World sailing championships and hosts regattas run by local yacht and sailing clubs.
The marina is situated on the south coast of the Lleyn Peninsula and provides access to some of the best sailing waters in the UK including Cardigan Bay,Anglesey and is a 'gateway' to other marina destinations, including Ireland's east coast.
A busy market town, with narrow streets, on the Llyn Peninsula, the name means 'salt water pool'.There is a full range of services and shops, cafes and restaurants. Every Wednesday an open air market is held in the 'Y Maes' where speciality local food and craft are for sale.
The town is within reach of several major tourist attractions including Criccieth and Harlech Castles the Snowdonia National Park and the designed village at Porthmadog.
There are many fine 'Blue Flag' beaches dotted throughout and at the tip of the peninsula reaching out to the west is Bardsey Island. This area of rugged coastline has been designated an 'Area of Outstanding National Beauty'
The 'Cambrian Coaster' train links Pwllheli to Machynlleth along the picturesque Cambrian coast and also other rail and bus services to Aberystwyth and beyond.
