The marina is beautifully situated on the stretch of water known as the Menai Strait that separates the Isle of Anglesey and the Welsh mainland. Facing south-westerly, the marina is located in a small narrow valley providing excellent shelter. The marina is divided into three sections, the inner lock basin has 120 berths, the tidal pontoon basin has 100 berths and outside the sea-lock entrance the tidal pontoon can accommodate 20 berths.
Between the inner lock basin and tidal pontoon basin is the Bascule road bridge which is controlled by traffic lights and is opened for marina traffic.
The former dry dock and small harbour is where craft can moor fore and aft along the attractive stone lined quays. Access is through the sea-lock entrance while an outer pontoon mooring is available on the sea-side entrance leading up to the lock.
The name 'Port Dinorwic' is also known by its Welsh name Y-Felinheli. The dock is also known as 'Menai Marina' or the 'Vaynol Dock'. For centuries this small port at the mouth of the Afon Heulyn, was used as a place of safe haven and was once used to export slate from the Dinorwic Quarries in the 19th century. The slate was brought to the dock along a narrow-gauge railway to the harbour. The docks are now listed under Grade II preservation.
The marina is nestled away in a treecovered ravine that adds to an attractive and picturesque environment. The town is nearby, although it is separated from the marina as the main street is positioned on the upper road above the small valley. This main street is part of the main road that connects with the A55 for Bangor, Holyhead and also to Plas Menai and Caernarfon to the south. Scattered throughout the hilly town are various places to wine and dine, some offering great views overlooking the Menai Strait.
