The River Ribble covers 15 miles of sailing from the open sea to the city's dock system. This stretch covers an area that is rich in wildlife and provides an interesting navigable experience in or out of the marina.
The marina is accessible through the original sea-lock that leads into the spacious surroundings of the former shipping dock (built in 1892, it has the distinction of having one of the largest dock basins in the UK) which has been redeveloped. A lay-by berth is located at the lock's stormgates entrance that leads into the basin where a road/rail swing bridge opens in unison when entering the marina.
The marina in the Riversway Docklands covers 40 acres of fully serviced pontoon berths in sheltered conditions. The marina offers many facilities and is complemented by a neighbouring restaurant and a large supermarket and fast-food outlet. In addition there are shops, entertainment and facilities in the city centre.
England's newest city is situated in the heart of the colourful county of Lancashire. The history of the city dates back to the Doomsday Book and to 1179 with the granting of the Charter which gave the right to hold a Guild Merchant ceremony every 20 years. As part of the cultural diversity of this north-western city, festivals take place throughout the summer months.
There has been major redevelopment of the city centre. Of special interest is the Grade I listed Harris Museum & Art Gallery. The city has a large University population and this is reflected in a vibrant choice of places to meet, dine and entertain. The Guild Hall and Charter Theatre provide year-round performances of many disciplines.
Preston has many attractions for the visitor and has good transportation links with destinations including Blackpool and the Fylde coast.
