The Foyle Pontoon was developed in 2003, the pontoon measuring 200- metres has safe and secure berthing right in the heart of the city. Visitors receive a full information pack along with a key for the security gate. The city's main attractions are within easy walking distance. The Foyle and the city offers a platform for visiting craft to explore the North West region and is also close to the Irish Sea cruising routes and the cruising waters of the Clyde Estuary.
The commercial port moved downriver to Lishally leaving behind a riverside which today, boasts luxury apartments, restaurants, riverside walkway and now, a serviced berthing facility for marine visitors. Since the opening of the facility, the annual Foyle Regatta is held in June/July and has attracted great interest from visitors.
The SE side of the Lough Foyle is low lying and shallow whereas the NW rises steeply between several village harbours. Note commercial shipping activity and salmon nets at night in the channel during June and July.
The historic walled City of Derry, also known as Londonderry is one of the longest continuously inhabited places in Ireland. Historical references date back to the 6th century when St. Colmcille/Columba founded a monastery. The city's name derives from the old Irish word 'daire' meaning an oak grove.
Famous for its 17th century walls, this is the most visibly striking feature, as the city is the only completely walled city in Ireland and kept in a splendid state of preservation. The walls were built as defences for settlers from England and Scotland during the Plantation of Ulster under James I.The cost of building the walls was financed by trade guilds from the City of London. The walls, 1.5km in length and interspersed with a series of town gates, took five years to build. Thus the prefix of London was made to the city.A unique walk can be taken on the wall ramparts with views throughout the city.
The city has had a colourful past down the centuries, from the 105 - day 'Siege of the Derry', mass emigration to America,Australia and Liverpool, the surrender of U-Boats at Lisahally in WW2 and 'The Troubles', which is reflected in street murals.
Today the city's resurgence and major developments arising from optimism has generated a vibrant and fascinating destination for more tourists than ever before. Cruiseships call to the city and this has also ensured that the rich history and culture is shared and unrivalled unlike any other place in Ireland.
