The 'Blue Flag' awarded marina at Victoria Dock has good shelter although there are strong tidal stream currents in The Swellies. This area is the stretch between the Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge and is where particular attention is required. Vessels normally go through at slack high water.
The dock has berths for nearly 50 craft and is accessed through a controlled gate.Vessels waiting for a suitable tide to enter the dock can use the Landerne Pier. This was built in 1996 and extends 37 metres out into the Menai Strait.A landing stage (minimum depth of 3 metres) is designed with a total of five levels to allow boarding and landing at any stage of the tide.
This has been a place of royalty for centuries where chieftains, kings and princes from Celtic times to the present day have left their historical footprint. Caernarfon Castle, the most famous castle in Wales, was completed in 1322 and is one of a series built during the reign of King Edward I to ward off the Welsh. It was here that the investiture in 1969 of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales took place.
Caernarfon has everything for the visitor - craft shops, restaurants, a fun centre, golf courses and leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool.
The 'Royal Town' is also one of contrasts: a busy market town, a major tourist centre and the county town for Gwynedd. There can be few towns more thoroughly Welsh than Caernarfon, rich in culture and strong in spirit as it hopes to continue its traditions in welcoming visitors.
