West Mersea is located on Mersea Island. The island is accessed by a causeway called ""The Strood"". The Strood is part of the B1025 road that runs from Colchester direct to Mersea. During the higher tides the Strood is covered by the sea and becomes impassable except for vehicles with high ground clearance.
South from West Mersea across the River Blackwater the now discommisioned Bradwell Power Station can be seen. From East Mersea, looking East across the River Colne Brightlingsea can be seen. The main beach at West Mersea is designated a 'Bathing Beach' (Essex County Council Regulations), although there are several other sand beaches around the island.
Noted for its sailing, fishing and oyster farming, West Mersea is a quiet resort with old fishing cottages and a shingly beach.
